Spiritual Care at Duke Raleigh Hospital

Duke Raleigh Hospital is committed to meeting the needs of all people. The Spiritual Care Department is available to patients, families, caregivers, physicians and staff members who seek ministries of growth, hope and healing through the following:

  • Quality spiritual care and support to patients, families, caregivers, physicians and staff
  • Coordination of bereavement and decedent care services
  • Innovative spiritual care and follow-up services

Services Provided by Spiritual Care:

  • Facilitation and support of religious practices of all faiths and spiritual paths

Reverend Adrian L. Dixon

About the Director

Reverend Adrian L. Dixon led the development of the Spiritual Care Department in 2003. He was Duke Raleigh Hospital's Clinical Chaplain from 2003-2005 and has served as the Director of Spiritual Care since 2006. Rev. Dixon has a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Campbell University and a Master of Divinity from Duke University. He is a member of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, the Association of Professional Chaplains and the North Carolina Chaplain's Association. He is actively involved in the community and speaks at churches, colleges and universities about the role of chaplaincy, spiritual care and ethics. In addition to his full-time role at the hospital, Rev. Dixon also pastors a church in Knightdale, NC.

This Sacred Space, given by the John Knight family is located in Duke Raleigh Hospital (on the 1st floor near the Emergency Room), and is open for prayer, meditation and reflection for persons of all faiths, as well as for regularly scheduled religious and spiritual-health related programs. Please contact the Spiritual Care Department at 919-954-3268 to discuss scheduling events or to reach the contact persons for your faith group.

Chaplain Associates/Internship Opportunities

The Spiritual Care Department at Duke Raleigh Hospital utilizes volunteers and lay people as Chaplain Associates. Chaplain Associates visit with patients and work with the Director of Spiritual Care to provide for the spiritual needs of patients at Duke Raleigh Hospital.

Internship opportunities are available for undergraduate students and seminarians during the Spring, Summer and Fall semesters.

Contact Information

The Director of Spiritual Care and Chaplain Associates and Interns are deployed throughout the hospital. If a patient, visitor or caregiver desires a visit, then please follow the directions based on day and time.

Weekdays:
You may phone the Spiritual Care Department Office at 919-954-3268 and request a visit from a Chaplain.

Evenings/Weekends: Your nurse can arrange for you to speak with a chaplain.
