Many elements go into that care. Patients at Duke Raleigh Hospital benefit directly from treatment advances pioneered through Duke University Medical Center's leading basic and clinical research enterprise. Duke Raleigh continually invests in top-notch health care professionals, the most sophisticated diagnostic equipment and state-of-the-art technology and facilities.

This commitment to excellent treatment, patient safety and service is expensive. In fact, the dollars collected for patient care fall far short of meeting the financial needs of the Hospital. That's why your philanthropic support is so important.

A Tradition of Excellence

Duke Raleigh Hospital opened its doors in 1914 as Mary Elizabeth Hospital, a 15-room facility directly across the street from Peace College. It was the first Raleigh hospital to administer penicillin and provide radium therapy for gynecological cancer. In 1978, it was purchased by Columbia-HCA system and relocated to a modern 186-bed facility on Wake Forest Road. Its name was changed to Raleigh Community Hospital.

In 1998, Raleigh Community Hospital became part of the non-profit Duke University Health System, and the exciting process of creating Duke Raleigh Hospital began. With support from Duke's nationally renowned educational, research and clinical programs, Duke Raleigh Hospital is uniquely positioned to collaborate with community health care providers to achieve new levels of service and care for the people of Wake and surrounding communities.

A Partnership to Improve Lives

Duke University and Duke University Medical Center began in 1924 with an extraordinary gift from North Carolina industrialist James Buchanan Duke. Mr. Duke's goal was to improve the health and well being of people throughout the Carolinas.

Now, gifts from patients, families and others support that goal for the people in the Wake Community. You can help Duke Raleigh Hospital develop innovative programs and services to meet our community's growing health care needs. All gifts are important and appreciated. Even modest donations, when merged together, add up to a significant resource for achieving our patient care and charity care objectives.

The Different Ways You Can Help

You may direct your gift in a number of ways:

  • The P.G. Fox Society: An unrestricted fund to improve services for all patients. Uses include the chaplain's program, continuing education for hospital staff and community outreach for Wake residents.
  • Cancer Services: Patients and families who are confronting cancer have special needs. Contributions are used to strengthen support services, acquire new technologies and provide disease-specific education and prevention.
  • Cardiovascular Services: Cardiovascular disease is a significant threat to the health of Americans. Contributions are used to acquire new technology and equipment, provide rehabilitative services, conduct heart health screenings and wellness services.
  • Orthopaedic Services: Illness and injury involving the musculoskeletal system impacts large numbers of people, young and old. Contributions are used to improve rehabilitative, surgical, educational and support services.

How to Make a Gift

Your gift may take whatever form best meets your needs or financial circumstances:

  • As outright gift of cash, appreciated securities or personal property.
  • A memorial or honorary gift to celebrate the life of a loved one, honor a special occasion, say 'thank you' for a kindness or special care or to express concern when someone becomes ill.
  • A planned gift to provide a tax savings and/or income to you.
  • A bequest to benefit Duke Raleigh Hospital through your will.
