Here are some things to expect on the day of your surgery at Duke Raleigh Hospital:
-
All patients must have a responsible adult at the time of discharge. Some medications may make you drowsy or impair your judgment. You will need someone to stay with you for 24 hours after your procedure. Your procedure may be canceled if this cannot be arranged.
-
Parking: there is a drop-off area at the Admitting entrance. A parking deck is conveniently located across from the Emergency Department entrance.
-
Please check in at the Admitting reception desk on arrival.
-
Do not eat or drink between midnight and the time of your surgery. To do so could result in cancellation of your procedure. You may, however, have sips of water to take your heart, blood pressure, seizure or asthma medication. Additionally, surgical patients should avoid use of alcohol and tobacco products for 24 hours prior to the procedure date.
-
You may bathe, shower, and brush your teeth. Do not swallow any water. Do not apply nail polish, heavy makeup, lotion, or powder.
-
Be sure to wear loose comfortable clothing.
-
For your safety, remove all jewelry, wedding bands, and body piercings prior to your arrival. Your family will be responsible for any valuables you bring.
-
Your family member/driver may be given a pager for use within the hospital during your procedure to keep him or her informed of your status.
