The Duke Raleigh Hospital Outpatient Ostomy Clinic offers patients of all ages and partner physicians’ ongoing access to a certified ostomy-care nurse specialist. We strive to provide ostomates with all components of high-quality care.
An ostomy is an opening in the abdomen that allows waste materials to pass out of the body and into a special bag or pouch. Ostomies can improve quality of life and bring relief to many patients who suffer from severe gastrointestinal or colon and rectal conditions.
There are several kinds of ostomies:
- Colostomy: A surgically created opening in the abdominal wall that allows the passage of digested food. It may be temporary or permanent, depending upon the portion of the colon involved.
- Ileostomy: A small surgically-created opening in the small intestine through which digested food passes. It may be temporary or permanent, and may involve removal of all or part of the colon.
- Urostomy: A surgical procedure that diverts urine from a diseased or defective bladder. It may include removal of the bladder.
