Meet the Newest Member of the Surgical Team

Duke Raleigh Hospital is proud to introduce our newest assistant in the operating room – a robot named da Vinci. The da Vinci surgical system provides robotic surgery capabilities at Duke Raleigh to enable surgeons to perform complex procedures using a minimally invasive approach.

The system consists of an ergonomic surgeon’s console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms which hold a camera and surgical instruments. The system is powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology to seamlessly translate the surgeon’s hand movements into even more precise movements.

The da Vinci system provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy by enabling surgeons to perform complex surgeries through small incisions. Patient benefits include less postoperative pain, less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, a quicker recovery and a more rapid return to daily activities.

Robotic surgery is currently being used at Duke Raleigh Hospital for the following gynecologic procedures:

  • Hysterectomies
  • Myomectomies (fibroid removal)
  • Lymph node dissections
  • Sacrocolpopexy for vaginal prolapse
