What is nuclear medicine?
Nuclear medicine is a safe and cost-effective diagnostic exam that images the body as well as treats diseases such as thyroid cancer. Nuclear medicine is unique because not only does it visualize anatomy but it also demonstrates function.
During a nuclear medicine test, radioactive material is introduced into the body by injection, inhalation, or by swallowing. The diagnostic dose of radiation is very low and does not cause any harm to the patient.
After the radioactive material has entered the patient’s body there may be a wait time. Afterward, a gamma camera is used to scan the particular body part in question.
