Computed Tomography Imaging Services

Computed tomography at Duke Raleigh Hospital performs a wide range of procedures, including:

What is computed tomography (CT)?

Computed tomography (CT) involves the use of a rotating x-ray tube, combined with a digital computer to obtain images of the body. This technique enables us to obtain cross-sectional images of the body organs and tissues.

Though there are many other imaging techniques, CT imaging has the unique ability to offer clear images of diverse types of tissue. CT imaging can provide views of soft tissue, bone, muscle, and blood vessels, without forfeiting clarity. All of these are extremely important when diagnosing different pathological processes.

What does the equipment look like?

A CT scanner consists of an examination table and a large machine with a hole in it. During the exam you will lie on the table as it move through the hole. Unlike an MRI, your whole body will not be enclosed.

The circular portion of the machine will rotate around you inside the machine's housing, and electronic x-ray detectors will capture images of your bones, tissues, and internal organs. The images are displayed and recorded on a computer located in another room.
