Duke Raleigh Hospital imaging services offers bone density testing using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), the most accurate test to measure bone strength. Learn what to expect during a bone density test at Duke Raleigh Hospital.
What is bone densitometry dual energy x-ray absorptiometry?
Bone densitometry measures bone density (strength) using an accurate and painless imaging tool called dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). DEXA uses a very small amount of radiation (a fraction of what is used in a general x-ray) to determine the bone density of your spine, hip, or wrist.
DEXA is the most accurate bone density test and makes it possible to diagnose bone loss at an early stage. This test also allows physicians to determine the rate of bone loss, show changes in bone density over time, and track progress made during treatment.
Hours of Operation
Bone density exams are performed in the Outpatient Imaging Center located at Duke Medicine Plaza, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
