Offering the Latest in Imaging Technology
Physicians at the Duke Raleigh Outpatient Imaging Center can now capture images of a beating heart in five heartbeats or an organ in one second with the addition of a new 64-slice CT scanner, the latest innovation in computed tomography (CT) technology. This LightSpeed VCT technology provides faster images with more accuracy and detail to help physicians have a better view of the body and organs for improved diagnosis. Other advantages include 3-D imaging capabilities and a lower dose of necessary radiation to the patient. What does 64-slice mean?The 64-slice CT scanner allows physicians to see inside the body via a combination of x-rays and computer simulation. The CT scan generates 64 images per rotation and can rotate 3 times per second around a patient’s body. A “slice” refers to the sensors that take the pictures of the body. Procedures Available5-Beat Cardiac™ – The ability to provide a comprehensive view of the heart and coronary arteries with sub-millimeter resolution in just five heartbeats.Triple Rule Out™ – The ability to help clinicians rule out (or in) three of the most life-threatening critical conditions in chest pain in one single scan – aortic dissection, pulmonary embolism and coronary artery disease. Stroke WorkUp – Once a stroke occurs, it is commonly believed that treatment must be delivered within an hour or less to ensure the best outcome for the patient. With the speed and resolution that the 64-slice scanner provides, physicians can make a quick diagnosis and determine the best course of treatment while reducing the number of exams a patient may need to undergo. CTA (computed tomography arteriogram) and coronary CTA’s – These non-invasive scans provide a detailed examination of the arteries in the body including the chest abdomen, head, neck and heart.
