Duke Raleigh Hospital First Hospital in NC to Receive NCNA Hallmarks of Healthy Workplaces Recognition

Raleigh, NC -- Duke Raleigh Hospital has been named the first hospital recipient in the state of the Hallmarks of Healthy Workplace designation by the North Carolina Nurses Association Professional Practice Advocacy Coalition (NCNA). The nursing recognition is given to facilities that have developed healthy workplaces for nursing staff and advocate nursing involvement in all facets of the organization.

A three-step process, the application included an initial survey in February 2006 of Duke Raleigh nursing staff. Because staff rated their workplace as “very good” in a number of areas, Duke Raleigh proceeded to the application phase which resulted in being the first hospital to ever advance to the final on-site tour of the facility by trained NCNA officials. The goal of the application and tour were to demonstrate excellence in core criteria including support of nursing professional development, system support for nurses to provide quality service and integration of nursing into operations and governance.

NCNA award officials noted Duke Raleigh's program excellence including a successful clinical ladder program, continuing education benefits, nursing community involvement, nursing participation in hospital service improvement teams and clinical committees, incentives including nursing recognition programs and hospital administration’s receptiveness to nursing needs and proposals for optimal patient care.

“DHRH is honored to be the first hospital recipient of this recognition and extremely proud of our nursing program and the steps we have taken to support our clinical staff. This is an excellent first step as we move toward national Magnet status. Thank you to everyone involved in the Hallmarks Award application process and involved in making our nursing program such a successful one,” said Rosemary Brown, Chief Nursing Officer of Duke Raleigh Hospital.

Duke Raleigh will be recognized as an award recipient at a ceremony at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem in October.
