Adult Volunteers

Volunteering is a rewarding and fulfilling way to give back to your community. Duke Raleigh Hospital adult volunteers are a needed and appreciated part of our health care team. You are always welcome here.

Positions Available

Listed below are some of the areas at Duke Raleigh Hospital in which volunteers serve. There are many opportunities to volunteer at Duke Raleigh Hospital, both clinical and non-clinical. We strive to match volunteer skills with our patient needs.

  • Care Ambassador: Greet visitors as they enter the hospital; provide information and directions about the hospital and surrounding areas; direct or accompany visitors to their destinations; be willing to help and assist guests with special requests; provide information regarding hospital services, events, and classes.
  • Information Desk: Provide patient information and direction to callers and visitors; provide information regarding hospital services, events, and classes; direct people to any hospital service or area they may be seeking, including: parking, lost and found, all hospital departments, and telephones. Must have excellent telephone etiquette.
  • Patient Care Units: Round on medical and surgical patients with comfort cart, providing comfort items and words of encouragement; assist with follow-up discharge calls; assist the staff as requested.
  • Surgical Services: Escort patients from waiting areas to preoperative area; bring blankets, gowns, etc., to patient area if requested by staff; strip, disinfect, and help make bed; run errands to ancillary departments; retrieve patient belongings from lockers; transport patient to radiology or car pick-up area after discharge; perform minor clerical work such as filing and transporting medical records.
  • Cancer Center: Assist the oncology patients and their families by providing information and help them feel more comfortable; assist with filing and general office help (patient nourishment, answering phones, collating, faxing, copying, pulling, and returning charts); run errands to the hospital (lab, pharmacy, cafeteria, radiology films, cashier, etc.).
  • Various clerical, filing, and data entry positions

Volunteer Requirements

  • Commit to volunteering a minimum of once a week for a four-hour shift for at least three months
  • Complete mandatory criminal background check, health screen, and orientation
  • Adhere to all Duke Raleigh Hospital policy and procedures, including the dress code
  • Be responsible for finding substitutes when unavailable for assigned shift
